Angelina Jolie: Hollywood star worries about young victims of domestic violence

Domestic violence, especially when children are the victims, is Angelina Jolie's "greatest concern" during the Corona crisis.

Hollywood megastar Angelina Jolie (45, "Maleficent: Forces of Darkness") is particularly concerned about very young victims of domestic violence during the corona pandemic. The actress drew attention to the problem in an interview with the US television news magazine "ExtraTV".

When asked about problems that women in particular have to struggle with during the crisis, Jolie explains: "My biggest concern during the pandemic is actually the children." There has been a 40 percent drop in reports of child abuse.

In her opinion, this is due to the fact that people such as teachers, who can otherwise recognize abuse and draw attention to it, have not seen the children. "That's why domestic violence is a huge concern at this time," Jolie explains.

Experts warned months ago

At the beginning of the crisis, experts worldwide warned that cases of domestic violence are likely to increase. Because of the exit restrictions, possible victims were locked up with perpetrators for longer periods of time. Anyone who suspects abuse or is affected themselves can obtain professional help at numerous locations – including youth welfare offices, the police or aid organizations.

The German Child Protection Association (DKSB), at which there are also other contact points, recommends, for example, the child and youth telephone and the parents' telephone from "Number against Kummer". Affected women or relatives of a victim can contact the "violence against women helpline", which offers free and confidential advice or, if necessary, arranges women's shelters.
