GENEVA, Dec 16 (Reuters) – American actress Angelina Jolie will quit her role as special envoy of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) but will continue humanitarian activities, the United Nations said in a statement on Friday. .
Angelina Jolie, who has carried out more than 60 field missions in her years with UNHCR, said she wanted to continue working with refugees outside the international body.
“I will continue to do everything in my power in the years to come to support refugees and other displaced people,” Angelina Jolie said in a statement announcing her departure.
“After 20 years of working within the UN system, I believe it is time for me to work differently, to engage directly with refugees and local organizations, supporting their advocacy for solutions,” she added.
The Hollywood star has been a UNHCR Special Envoy since 2012.
This year, she traveled to Yemen and Ukraine to meet displaced people.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, thanked her for her service, commitment and contribution to refugees.
“After a long period of success with UNHCR, I appreciate his desire to change his commitment and I support his decision,” said Filipo Grandi.
