Animal Welfare Award 2022 – Which dog should I give a new home to?

There are many things to consider when looking for an animal companion. Dubious origin often causes problems.

If, after careful consideration, the decision is made that a dog will come into the house, the only question left is where to get the animal from. Should it be a purebred puppy from the breeder? Or would you rather give a dog from the animal shelter a new home? In any case, there are a few things to consider. “The animal shelter employees do a great job, they have their hands full. Many dogs are looking for a new home there,” says Tina Muralt, the state’s animal welfare director. Shelters have been overflowing with dogs, especially since the pandemic, that were taken in and then returned during lockdowns. “Dogs need time and affection, otherwise they become problem dogs,” says one shelter manager. This is often the reason why the animals usually end up in the home. The focus of the Animal Welfare Award of the State of Carinthia is the relationship between dogs and humans. Do you have a special bond with your four-legged friend? Then upload a photo, a drawing or a link to a video of your animal at krone.at/kaernten. On October 4th, the animal welfare awards will be handed over to the Carinthian state government in the Hall of Mirrors.Dangers of the illegal puppy trade and dubious breedersThe illegal puppy and pet trade is also booming. “Dogs that are brought to Austria without vaccinations or veterinary care can bring in dangerous diseases. Parvovirus, the dog epidemic, for example,” warns Marie-Christin Rossmann, initiator of the Bio-Crime project, which campaigns across borders against illegal animal trade. Reputable breeders can be recognized by the fact that they don’t breed five different breeds, but usually only one or two. “They will also always find out about the buyer – for example, ask whether they already have dog experience,” says the expert. The price of the animals could also unmask illegal breeders. “There are often enormous profit margins on cheap puppies,” says Rossmann. Interested parties are advised to get to know their future companion beforehand. Animal shelters, for example, make this possible by taking the animal for a walk together.
