Anne Hidalgo announces a citizen vote on self-service scooters in Paris


At the polls, citizens. The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, announced that Parisians would be called to the voting booth on Sunday April 2 to decide whether or not to maintain self-service scooters in the capital. A referendum which comes as the town hall has asked the operators of these fleets of electric vehicles to take measures to improve their relationship with the city.

Lime, Dot and Tier in the hot seat?

The mayor of Paris thus spoke to the readers of the Parisian. Anne Hidalgo calls for the outright abolition of fleets of self-service electric scooters, but assures that the decision of the Parisians will be respected.

This referendum, or vote, will take place in the polling stations. To participate, you will have to be registered on the electoral rolls of the city. Then it will be “Answer a very simple question: do we continue or not with self-service scooters?”explained the candidate for the 2022 presidential election.

David Belliard, deputy mayor of Paris in charge of the transformation of public space, transport, mobility, the street code and roads, follows in the footsteps of Anne Hidalgo. “It’s cumbersome, it’s dangerous. […] We have too many negative feedbacks”he commented to our colleagues at AFP.

If the elected municipal officials believe that the outcome of the ballot is uncertain, a recent survey carried out among 600 people aged 18 to 65, representative of the inhabitants of intramural Paris, estimated that 70% of the population did not wish see these self-service fleets disappear.

A street code presented in June

And to reconcile old and new means of transport in the capital, the town hall is considering new tools. “There is no street code, to say how we behave and how the municipal police punish those who do not respect the rulessays Anne Hidalgo, always to our colleagues from Parisian. At the end of 2022, self-service scooter operators unveiled, at the request of the authorities, several proposals intended to make the use of their vehicles more acceptable to the population. During a joint press conference of the three operators (Lime, Dot, Tier), they had also pointed out the meager efforts made by the town hall of Paris to adapt the city to these new means of transport.
