Anne Soupa "candidate" for the post of archbishop in Lyon

The big question is the place of women in the Catholic Church. Biblist Anne Soupa announced her candidacy for the Archbishopric of Lyon in the hopes of provoking "awareness."

A candidacy which "should liberate women so that they dare say: why not me? And try to break through the glass ceiling". It is in these terms that Anne Soupa expressed herself on FranceInfo. Working in the Church for 35 years, the theologian announced on Monday her candidacy to become archbishop of Lyon following the resignation of Philippe Barbarin, archbishop of the city.

AFP stresses that normally the appointment of an archbishop does not imply a candidacy: the pope chooses from among the names proposed to him by the Apostolic Nuncio in Paris, ambassador of the Holy See.

"I will send (at the Nonce in Paris) a profession of faith, a program for Lyon, a biography and a press release ", said Anne Soupa, who in 2009 founded the Catholic Conference of the Baptized Francophones, a reform movement that claims thousands of members.

Anne Soupa wants more than anything in her approach "an awareness that another face of the Church is possible " while today "no women" does not direct a diocese, is a priest or deacon. In her profession of faith, she invites women "bridles " at "apply wherever they feel called ".

Not being a religious, she nevertheless claims "field work". In particular, she chairs the Skirt Committee, which has campaigned since 2008 for the just recognition of women in the Church. It is also in favor of another type of governance of the Church, in which the laity would have a role. "At a time when the Church is in a very deep crisis, we must put another pattern in my head ", she confessed.

"The Church remains torn apart, a prisoner of this clericalism," said Anne Soupa, who wants to see in her candidacy "a helping hand for a certain modernization".
