The reactions of the international community have been linked since Vladimir Putin’s speech on Friday announcing the annexation of four Ukrainian territories, Lugansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporijjia in the Russian Federation. The European Union condemns these “pseudo annexations” while the United States recalls its support for Ukraine.

The reactions continue to rain after Vladimir Putin’s speech with great fanfare on Friday before his senators and his government in which he formally endorses the annexation of four Ukrainian regions. An act condemned almost unanimously by the international communities.

“We will never give in to this farce”

In this speech, Vladimir Putin welcomed the Lugansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhia regions to the Russian Federation. By painting the portrait of a Russia, sister of Ukraine, which would have come to its rescue against a “colonialist and decadent” West which seeks only to destroy Russia, in the words of the head of the Kremlin.

A particularly virulent speech which did not fail to react. President Volodymyr Zelensky has spoken on several occasions. “We will never give in to this farce,” he assured. “Ukraine has taken decisions for its defence. They will all be applied. We have made an accelerated request to join NATO. And as for negotiations with Russia… We will only negotiate with a president other than Mr. Putin .”

The EU condemns these “pseudo annexations”

The countries of the European Union unanimously condemned these “pseudo annexations”, as did the President of the United States, Joe Biden, who spoke overnight to reiterate his support for Ukraine. “Putin can’t take over his neighbor’s territory and get away with it, it’s as simple as that. We stay on course. We will continue to provide military equipment so that Ukraine can defend its territorial freedom. We will invest an additional 13 billion dollars,” he said.

Russian veto of Security Council resolution

The UN Security Council also considered a resolution on these illegal annexations but Russia used its veto on Friday to prevent the adoption of a Security Council resolution, while China, India, Brazil and Gabon abstained.
