Annoying mosquitoes: which remedies actually help – even with bites

Don’t want a scent to get rid of the mosquitoes? Even if this is probably the simplest, most tolerable and also most natural variant, there are of course some alternatives.

However, if your love for animals does not end with insects, you should bear in mind that many of the following remedies will kill the mosquitoes or at least prevent them from reproducing. And that’s not all: Other animals such as rodents, ants or spiders are also sometimes sensitive to the corresponding agents.

What you can do without are devices or apps that are supposed to drive away mosquitoes with ultrasound. Although there are plenty of these devices, studies show that they are actually useless and only achieve homeopathic effects. The reason: Mosquitoes do not have good hearing at all. The ultrasonic waves are supposed to disrupt the nervous system of the mosquitoes and drive them away – but most mosquitoes don’t even perceive the sound. At least that is the result of an extensive meta-study by the Cochrane Collaboration.

What definitely works, but represents certain death for the mosquitoes, are so-called Mosquito plug (view on Amazon). These are small vaporizers that you plug into any outlet. A small amount of neurotoxin is then released. This is just enough to finish off the little bloodsuckers – people shouldn’t notice any physical effects. Nevertheless, you should make sure when using them that you do not leave the small devices activated in closed rooms for several days and nights. The Nexa Lotte mosquito plug, for example, offers a useful additional function. The small device comes with an integrated switch that you can use to deactivate the vaporizer at any time. The starter pack with vaporizer and liquid for 45 nights of operation is available for regular almost 10 euros at Amazon. According to the manufacturer, one plug makes a room up to 15 m² free of mosquitoes. A refill pack for another 45 nights costs around 5 euros.
