FC Barcelona puts Koeman in front of the door
A loss to Rayo Vallecano, only ninth in the Primera División – that’s not enough for FC Barcelona. The Catalans are now drawing conclusions and changing the coach: the Dutchman Koeman has to leave. It is still unclear who will replace him.
FC Barcelona has separated from its coach Ronald Koeman. The decision was made on Wednesday evening after the 0-1 at Rayo Vallecano in the Spanish league, the football club said. Koeman will say goodbye to the team around national goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen on Thursday. Initially, the association did not provide any information about a successor.
After ten games, FC Barcelona is ninth in the midfield of the table, far from the top and the Champions League places. In the premier class, the group with FC Bayern Munich is threatened with an early end before the knockout phase. Barça have lost four of the last six competitive games. Barça signed Koeman in the summer of 2020 and gave him a two-year deal at the time. The 58-year-old was previously the national coach of the Netherlands.
The 1-0 defeat at Rayo Vallecano probably brought the barrel to overflow. The Colombian veteran Radamel Falcao scored the decisive goal in the 30th minute. Barcelona’s Memphis Depay also failed with a penalty kick to keeper Stole Dimitrievski (71.).
