Farewell version 3.5.3 of Mastodon. The decentralized social network has just evolved into version 4.0.0 in an attempt to always be a convincing alternative to Twitter.

The list of changes, novelties and fixes is in any case very long.

Mastodon passes the fourth

As the chaos continues at Twitter, Mastodon charts its course. Not only does the decentralized platform benefit from new users, but it has also just upgraded to version 4.0.0.

If you don’t see the changes we’re going to list on your Mastodon instance yet, that’s normal. Indeed, it is up to the administrators of each server to carry out (or not) the migration to this new major version. This is also not an update to the mobile app, but to the infrastructure behind the service.

Lots of improvements and fixes

In addition to patches, including security, on all floors, Mastodon 4.0.0 therefore offers some new features. First of all, we will note the possibility of following hashtags, translating posts and choosing a language for displaying trends. The different filter systems are also gaining in richness, as well as the composition of toots which can now include files of new types (WebP, Wave, AVIF, HEIC).

Posts can now be edited from the web interface, and no longer only from the mobile application. The rules of a server are now indicated when registering for it. More generally, the interface benefits from new icons and other small visual changes.

Administrators will appreciate the ability to define customizable roles for users, whereas until now there were only three fixed roles (user, moderator and admin). What gain flexibility in the rights granted. The administrators interface also gets access to webhooks and other elements.

All the elements of this 4.0.0 update are listed on GitHub. It is also specified that a part is financed by the NGI0 Discovery fund.
