Another setback for the Saxons

Stuttgart trips RB Leipzig

In the first Sunday game of the 60th Bundesliga season, RB Leipzig cannot win at VfB Stuttgart despite an early Nkunku goal. After the victories of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, the Saxons experience a damper at the start.

Second competitive game, second setback: The ambitious cup winners RB Leipzig also missed their first win of the season against their favorite opponent. The team of coach Domenico Tedesco did not get over a meager (1: 1) one week after the Supercup bankruptcy against FC Bayern at VfB Stuttgart.

Goalscorer Christopher Nkunku put the unconvincing Leipzig ahead in the eighth minute. Naouirou Ahamada equalized for VfB, who only saved themselves at the last minute last season (31′). It was only the second VfB goal in previous duels against Leipzig.

At RB, million dollar purchase David Raum celebrated a mixed debut in front of 46,000 spectators. In general, the Saxons again largely failed to prove their class. After all, RB remained undefeated in their ninth duel against the Swabians (seven wins, two draws).

VfB could even have led

Tedesco made four changes to his team after the 5-3 defeat by Bayern Munich. Konrad Laimer, who was willing to leave, was absent due to an ankle injury he sustained in training. On the other hand, left-back Raum, who Leipzig had signed for around 25 million euros from Hoffenheim, ran for the first time for RB.

But the focus was first on Nkunku. The Frenchman completed the first RB chance straight away and picked up where he left off last season. Nkunku had 20 goals (plus 15 assists). After brief initial difficulties, Leipzig clearly kept the pressure on, but failed to step up and quickly ensure clear conditions. This should pay off.

VfB, who initially could hardly free themselves, became more active and were rewarded by Ahamada, who kept an overview from the edge of the penalty area. VfB were able to keep the game balanced until the break, but were unlucky when Konstantinos Mavropanos (45+3) shot the post.

Shortly after the change, Stuttgart could have taken the lead when newcomer Josha Vagnoman lifted the ball over the goal from a free position. Leipzig found it difficult to find a gap in the well-stacked VfB defence. Only in the final phase did the favorite shift up a gear again, but failed again and again due to the strong VfB keeper Florian Müller.
