Another strike at Deutsche Bahn: How to get your money back

The train drivers of Deutsche Bahn will strike again from 2 a.m. tomorrow. Many tickets expire or can no longer be used. We’ll tell you how to get your money back.

Deutsche Bahn is accommodating during the strike: Long-distance and local transport tickets that have already been booked for the strike period remain valid until September 17th and can be used flexibly. There is no train connection with saver prices. Trains other than those indicated on the ticket can also be used to continue your journey. This also applies to local trains.

If you do not want to travel at a later point in time, you can buy a ticket via a Goodwill form on the DB website or have it reimbursed free of charge at the DB sales point.

In principle, however, also apply during industrial action Passenger rights of the EU passenger regulation, explains Beatrix Kaschel from the local transport arbitration board in Düsseldorf. This means that the train has to repay at least part of the fare even in the event of delays.

The amount of compensation depends on the length of the delay. “If passengers arrive at least 60 minutes later than planned, they are entitled to a 25 percent reimbursement, and if they arrive more than 120 minutes it is 50 percent,” says Kaschel. These claims can be made with the Passenger rights form online, on the train or in a DB office.
