Anthony Mackie: Marvel needs to do a lot of work on diversity

At Marvel there is still a lot of catching up to do when it comes to diversity, especially behind the camera, says Avengers star Anthony Mackie.

Actor Anthony Mackie (41) is big at Marvel. In the "Avengers" – and some solo films, he is part of the hero ensemble as a Falcon, with "Falcon & The Winter Soldier" he also has his own series in the pipeline at the streaming provider Disney +. Nevertheless, Mackie, in front of and especially behind the camera, misses the diversity that the Mavel superheroes actually stand for, as he has now revealed in a conversation with "Variety".

"It really bothered me that I made seven Marvel films in which every producer, director, stunt employee, costume designer, production assistant, everyone was white." The fact that this was only different for the film "Black Panther" was an even bigger problem in his eyes: "We had a black producer, his name was Nate Moore. He did 'Black Pather'", Mackie leads out. Suddenly there was also a black filmmaker (Ryan Coogler, 34), costume designer and stunt choreographer.

What annoys him about it: "This is even more racist than anything else. If you hire black people only for black film, doesn't that mean that you say they're not good enough for a film with a mostly white cast?" He wanted to use his influence as an established star of the Marvel universe more than ever so that the "best person for the job" will be hired in the future – regardless of their skin color or gender.
