Anxious moments – gas cloud leaked: environmental alarm in Styria

Environmental alarm in the Styrian district of Leibnitz: A previously unknown gas mixture escaped in a metal processing plant on Tuesday morning. Contrary to initial information, it was certainly not nitric acid. Residents were told not to go outside. After moments of fear for the population, the all-clear was given around 9 a.m.

In a company in Ragnitz near St. Georgen an der Stiefing, a yellow-red cloud escaped around 6.45 a.m. on Tuesday morning. The first reports spoke of toxic nitric acid, but investigations have since revealed that it was a previously unknown gas mixture Facebook posted. The districts of Ragnitz, Badendorf and Gundersdorf were affected. The authorities asked the population not to go outside until further notice and to keep windows and doors closed. According to the police, no one was injured, and the cause of the accident is currently the subject of ongoing investigations. Numerous fire brigades were also deployed.
