Anxious moments – stand-up paddler gets caught in a storm on Lake Constance

A 45-year-old woman who got into a thunderstorm with her stand-up paddle board (SUP) on Lake Constance experienced scary moments on Friday evening. Wind gusts of up to 60 km/h threatened to drive the athlete to the middle of the lake.

At 7:55 p.m., the rescue and fire brigade control center in Vorarlberg received an emergency call from a skipper who had observed that a person on a SUP was being driven onto the open lake on Lake Constance in the area of ​​the Harder harbor entrance and needed help. At this time, there was a strong wind warning for the entire Lake Constance due to an approaching thunderstorm. The meteorologists forecast wind gusts of up to seven Beaufort (60 km/h) from the south. Due to the increasing offshore wind, the woman could no longer stay close to the shore with her SUP board and was drifted towards the middle of the lake. The alarmed emergency boats of the Austrian blue light organizations immediately went to the scene. The 45-year-old woman in distress was finally discovered by the crew of the water lifeboat V-9, rescued and brought to safe waters unharmed.
