For new apps uploaded to the App Store, getting to the top of the top downloads charts has never been easy. And it has obviously not improved in recent months.

Competition is fierce on stores dedicated to downloading applications. And the App Store seems to be among the most ruthless if we are to believe a study conducted by Sensor Tower. In its report, the group revealed the number of installations required for software to reach the top of the rankings on the American giant’s online store. And it’s really not easy!

A real obstacle course

Thus, an application not related to a video game would need approximately 156,000 downloads to clinch first place in the famous ranking. As an indication, “only” 114,000 were needed in 2019. A figure, however, much lower than that of 2020, which climbed to 185,000 downloads. A phenomenon that was obviously caused by the pandemic, still according to Sensor Tower.

In addition, this survey also reveals that mobile video games published on the App Store have the possibility of arriving at the top of the ranking more easily. In this specific case, 93,000 downloads would suffice, a hefty drop of 46% from the 171,000 required three years earlier. But it is important to note that Apple uses other evaluation criteria. The factors in question could be the frequency of use of the applications, the number of new users or even the volume of uninstallations and reviews.
