After six years, the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden has a woman in government again. Katrin Alder is elected.

There was no contest in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden. For the vacant seat of the outgoing finance director Paul Signer (FDP), his party colleague Katrin Alder was the only candidate. In addition, the Herisauer was supported from left to right. Alder achieves the second-best result after Alfred Stricker.

Alder said in the run-up to the election that she would have liked it to be different: “Of course it’s easier for me without an election campaign. On the other hand, it’s not healthy. A healthy democracy has choices. I would have wished for that too, especially for the population.” After six years, a woman is returning to the Ausserrhoden government council. Since the resignation of Marianne Koller-Bohl in 2017, the council has been an all-male body.

Will the departments be redistributed?

In addition to Katrin Alder, the four previous members of the government council took up positions. These are: Dölf Biasotto (FDP), Yves Noël Balmer (SP), Alfred Stricker (independent of the party) and Hansueli Reutegger (SVP). All are re-elected. SP government councilor Balmer will also become the new Landammann and will follow Biasotto.

It is possible that the election for the big department back will follow. It is unclear whether Alder will take over the finance department from Signer and whether the previous government councilors will remain in their departments.
