Apple Arcade: the firm is working on its own controller to play on iPhone, iPad and Mac

Apple has not said its last word in the world of video games and is preparing to launch its own controller compatible with Apple Arcade. A patent filed by the Cupertino company recently discovered indeed reveals a relatively classic device, in particular equipped with sensors capable of detecting the movements of the player.

By launching Apple Arcade in 2019, the Cupertino company has returned to the charge in an area in which it has not yet been able to impose itself: video games. Since then, although the success remains overall quite mixed, in particular because of increasingly fierce competition, the service has managed to carve out a small place in the sector, thanks in part to these multiple promotions and offers to attract users.

The manufacturer does not intend to stop there and is preparing other projects aimed at attracting more and more subscribers. And obviously, that goes through the creation ofa dedicated controller. This is revealed by a patent spotted by our colleagues at AppleWorld, which therefore describes a controller that seems to do exactly what is asked of it. Indeed, we should not expect a pioneer in terms of innovation.

Soon a controller dedicated to Apple Arcade games

According to the patent, the controller would connect via bluetooth to the user’s device. It would integrate several motion sensors, allowing the player’s gestures to be transcribed. It could also activate as soon as it is taken in hand. With a potential gyroscopic functionality, that’s about all we know about the controller.

At a time when the latter are increasingly needed on smartphones and tablets, Apple’s strategy could well bear fruit. Probably sold on its online store and at resellers, the controller can be used on many games like NBA 2K22 Arcade Edition, Angry Birds Reloaded, Skate City or Alto’s Odyssey: The Lost City.

Nevertheless, the Cupertino company will have to expect fierce competition. Remember that the PS5 and Xbox Series controllers are compatible with iPhones since iOS 14.5, and that players who already have one of them will surely not buy a second. Not to mention the many other third-party vendors who also offer their solutions.
