On iOS, Spotify can now offer its subscriptions without going through Apple’s services. However, as luck would have it, the latest version of the streaming application takes longer to be validated than usual.

Apple is not very satisfied with the rules dictated by the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which recently came into force in Europe, and is making it known. All means are good to put obstacles in the way of platforms which can finally circumvent the rules in force on iOS in the rest of the world, so much so that discontent is growing in part of the sector.

Especially since, when your name is Apple, you have more than one trick up your sleeve, and it’s Spotify which is currently paying the price.

Traffic jams on the App Store

If you use Spotify on iOS, you’ll likely see changes to the app’s subscription page. At least, in Europe, since the platform now has the right to offer in-app purchases and to display the price of its packages, without Apple being able to do anything about it.

It’s a breath of fresh air for the Swedish company, which can thus offer a smoother and simpler experience to its future and current subscribers, while getting rid of the 30% commission charged by the App Store. But, you may not have access to all of this yet, and for good reason: Apple doesn’t seem very cooperative.

It’s now been nine days and we’re waiting for feedback from Apple regarding our app submission said Jeanne Moran, spokesperson for Spotify, at The Verge. Indeed, the Swedish firm would have sent the new update of its version for iOS on March 5, and it should have been accepted and deployed the next day, as usual.

A bad student who does as he pleases

As you can imagine, this is not just any update, since it brings precisely the changes permitted by the implementation of the DMA. According to Spotify, this is a “ new example of how Apple, if left unchecked, will seek to circumvent and/or not comply with the Commission’s decision “. This quote does not come from just anywhere, since it is taken from an email sent by the Swedish company to European officials.

The latter are invited to contact the Californian giant to clarify things. And, Spotify takes the opportunity to point out that blocking updates could also prevent or delay the deployment of important fixes or new features. The email states that “ Given Apple’s track record, Spotify is concerned that this delay is intentional and intended to slow down or avoid compliance “. Ironic, given that the DMA aims to limit anticompetitive practices.

Apple representatives will certainly have to find a base in Brussels, because the European Commission has a lot to do with them. Recently, she had to deal with the case of Epic Games, which had its developer profile withdrawn shortly after its CEO criticized the attitude of the American giant towards the DMA. The European Union also ruled in favor of Spotify in another case concerning App Store rules, by condemning the Apple firm to a fine of 1.8 billion euros for abuse of a dominant position.
