As we know, Apple has until 2024 to switch to USB-C. As a reminder, USB-C has been imposed as a universal charger within the European Union for a large number of electronic devices. This is obviously a pressure shot aimed at Apple, which has always refused to adopt this standard on its iPhone and AirPods.

Apple talks about USB-C on iPhone

The Wall Street Journal asked Greg Joswiak, Apple’s chief marketing officer, if Apple was going to switch to USB-C, and replied: ” Obviously we’ll have to comply, we have no choice “.

During this exchange, with Greg Joswiak and Vice President of Software Craig Federighi at the Tech Live conference, it was clarified that Apple was sad to be legally forced to make this change. Greg Joswiak explained how Apple has always preferred to go its own way and trust its engineers rather than being forced to adopt hardware standards by legislators. In this specific case, the decision of the European Union seems absurd to him.

Apple also indicates that this switch to USB-C will generate electronic waste. However, none of the Apple officials interviewed mentioned a potential portless iPhone that relies solely on wireless charging, which would theoretically be allowed by the European Union.
