Spatial computing has gained momentum since the launch of the Vision Pro mixed reality headset. According to a new patent, Apple could extend this technology to monitors in other products like the MacBook or Apple Watch to display 3D content.
Apple files patent to integrate spatial computing
The Cupertino company could do without a headset to display 3D content to users. According to this patent, this would be through the use of lenticular screens. These panels display and hide screen content depending on the viewing angle. If you move your head, the image subtly changes to create a 3D effect. In the case of the Apple Vision Pro and to roughly summarize, the mixed reality headset shows slightly different images to each of your eyes.
The patent also shows that the Californian company is considering a functionality allowing several people to benefit from this spatial computing. There would therefore be several optimal viewing positions for group activities such as working on 3D models as a team.
Obviously, we are talking about spatial computing different from the Apple Vision Pro. In this specific case, it is not a question of displaying 3D windows in the virtual space around the room. The uses would be different for each product. For example, we can imagine more detailed renderings in Apple Plans.
And, remember, this is just a patent. There is no guarantee that spatial computing will ever be integrated into Apple’s devices.
