Those who dare to do it can order replacement parts for a broken iPhone from Apple from 2022 and repair the device themselves.

The display is cracked and the battery only lasts a few hours? From the beginning of next year it should be possible for Apple customers to repair or replace broken parts of an iPhone themselves. The company announced this on November 17th.

The offer called “Self Service Repair” will initially only start in the USA in 2022 and initially only include a few models. Initially, there will only be components for variants of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13. Macs with M1 chips will later be able to be repaired by consumers. In the course of the year, the whole thing is to be expanded to other countries. It is currently not clear whether or when Germany will be there.

In addition, initially only modules should be available for purchase that require maintenance most often on average – including for the battery, camera and display. Here, too, the offer is to be expanded. It is also not yet known how deeply interested customers have to dig into their pockets for the individual components.

For tech freaks only?

Apple also warns that the “Self Service Repair” option is not intended for everyone – but for users “who have the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices,” according to a press release. For example, you should first look in the relevant instructions to ensure that repairs can be carried out.

If you do the repair yourself, you can send the used part in for recycling later in order to have an amount offset against the purchase price. For the majority of customers, however, it is still the safer way to always contact the company or an authorized repair service.
