In an article published on May 11, 2024 on the Bloomberg website, Mark Gurman highlighted that the Apple firm was on the verge of entering into an agreement with OpenAI to introduce the ChatGPT conversational agent on iPhones with iOS 18.

A deal with OpenAI would allow Apple to offer a popular chatbot as part of a series of new AI features it plans to announce next month.

As a reminder, Mark Gurman spoke last month of discussions between Apple and Google to add the Gemini chatbot to iPhones. “These discussions did not result in an agreement, but they are continuing”, he explained.

On Twitter/X this May 12, the Bloomberg journalist provided some details regarding Apple’s strategy around artificial intelligence. The firm would thus plan:

  • An LLM model made in Apple running locally on the iPhone;
  • An internally developed LLM model running in the cloud via Apple servers, potentially equipped with M2 Ultra chips, according to recent rumors;
  • A conversational agent, “OpenAI definitely, Google maybe”.
