Apple has decided on the name of the operating system that will be used by its future virtual reality headset. Make way for “xrOS”! A name that owes nothing to chance.

Apple never wants to be behind on an innovation. After the smartphone, the apple brand should be one of the main propagators of virtual reality. With the baptism of the operating system of its future headsets, the American giant also intends to occupy both the fields of augmented reality AND virtual reality.

xrOS, more versatile than RealityOS

Indeed, according to information from Bloomberg resumed by Macrumor, the Cupertino company has decided to abandon the initial name of its software, RealityOS (or rOS) for “xrOS”. This “XR” means “ extended reality (or extended reality), a concept whose objective is to understand both augmented reality and virtual reality. As a reminder, the first is a technology that improves what the user actually sees, while the second creates a totally digital reality.

Apple has planned for this “xrOS” system new versions of its Messages and Maps applications, which will be built in such a way as to integrate the virtual and augmented reality dimensions developed by its helmet. A development kit is also provided for the production of third-party applications.

The xrOS name registered across the world

And a sign that the manufacturer seems to be moving quickly on the file, a front company called Deep Dive LLC has registered the “xrOS” trademark in several countries around the world. An operation probably led by Apple if we are to believe Bloombergthe company founded by Steve Jobs having become accustomed to using this kind of discreet company in order to register the brands of future products.

The future virtual/augmented reality headset should be launched by Apple in the first half of 2023, although no specific date has yet been filtered. The Apple Worldwide Developers Conference WWDC event is mentioned by some as being able to host the presentation ceremony of the headset.
