The last Mac Pro released by Apple dates from 2019. The machine, dedicated to creative people of all kinds, has not yet gone through the mill of Apple Silicon chips. It will not take long, however, if we are to believe information from Mark Gurmann at Bloomberg.
An even more powerful M2 “Extreme” chip
According to the American journalist, Apple would be putting a big lick of paint on its range of Mac computers. The Mac Pro, which is one of the few still not to have switched to the ARM architecture, could well panic the benchmarks when it comes out. The machine would be equipped with an M2 “Ultra” or “Extreme” chip which would be two to four times more powerful than the M2 Max chips – which have not yet been released. A version currently being tested in Apple’s labs would ship an M2 chip with a 24-core processor, 76 cores dedicated to graphics processing and 192 GB of RAM.
If the M2 Ultra/Extreme chip continues to be as impressive as the ARM chips released so far, this future Mac Pro could be a real thunderbolt. And that’s without counting on an even higher-end version that would ship 48 power cores, 152 graphics cores and 256 GB of RAM. The Mac Pro with ARM chip would not come out before 2023, so there’s no need to wait for it under the tree.
MacBook Pro M2 Max in the coming months
Still in the radius of Macs, other machines are in preparation. MacBook Pros with the famous M2 Pro and M2 Max processors could land in the coming months. The M2 Max chip (the more high-end of the two) would have 12 CPU cores (8 Performance / 4 Autonomy) and 38 graphics cores and would be integrated into Apple’s traditional 14 and 16-inch machines. Everything would be accompanied by 64 GB of RAM. Finally, a Mac Mini with M2 Pro chip could also see the light of day in the coming months.
Last year we already highlighted the impressive graphics performance offered by the M1 Max chip. If Apple manages to reproduce the recipe while giving it a little more punch, the Mac Pro could become a machine of choice for photographers, videographers and artists. It only remains to know the price, which looks very likely salty.
