What will the future of the MacBook line be made of? It has been rumored for some time that Apple is secretly working on folding devices. But the company would also have begun to test a technology already seen in other manufacturers for its laptops.
A significant lead for Apple in the folding segment
We now learn that the Cupertino company has begun to develop a folding device with a diagonal of 20.25 inches, according to The Elec, and that it has begun to test this technology with its main manufacturers. Such a screen diagonal would immediately exclude the possibility that it could be devices like the iPhone or even the iPad. The mystery product could apparently offer, in its folded form, a 15.3-inch screen that would rather correspond to what can currently be found on the company’s MacBooks.
Apple would not be the first brand to launch this type of product and would thus follow in the footsteps of Lenovo and Asus, which have both already launched their own folding screen laptop model. Lenovo, a pioneer with its ThinkPad X1 Fold, which has since had an update, was followed by Asus and its Zenbook 17 Fold Oled. Both come with 12 and 12.5 inch screens, reaching 16.3 and 17.3 inches when unfolded.
OLED as a priority
The marketing date for these new devices is not yet fixed and could only be around 2026 or 2027, according to rumors. Before that, The Elec reported that Apple would be likely to make all of its product lines benefit from Oled panels. According to the Korean media, the iPad would be a priority with a switch to Oled estimated at 2024, with two models of different sizes. MacBooks would follow between 2025 and 2026, before any folding devices.
