Apple is testing the future M3 chip on an iMac

2

iMac fans may need to be patient, as a new iteration could take quite a while to release.

We told you about it recently, an M2 chip is in the making for several devices from the apple brand. While the announcement of the new Mac Mini, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro 13 could take place at the WWDC 2022 conference in June, the Cupertino company is already preparing for the sequel.

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, whose information is often reliable, informed in his Power On letter that the company was testing a future M3 chip in an iMac in addition to M2 chips present in nine other devices.

Bad news for the iMac

Note that the iMac is not on the list of devices tested with the new upcoming M2 chip, which would mean that Apple’s computer would not experience a new iteration with the actual release of the M3 chip “before the end of next year, at the earliest”.

How the pricing table works

This means that at best, a new iMac shouldn’t be expected before late 2023 at best. Hopes of seeing an iMac presented at WWDC are therefore increasingly slim given that it would be surprising if the brand presented an update of a computer with a chip from last year at an event aimed at developers.

Back off to better blow up

The iMac tends to go through a longer development cycle than some more popular models like the MacBook Pro. If this information therefore proves to be correct, there will therefore be more than two years of difference between the iMac 2021 and its successor.

On the bright side, this delay would allow users of the machine to make a good 2 generations, from M1 to M3, which should result in significantly increased performance.

Finally, Gurman added a small note of hope to those who regret the end of production of the 27-inch iMac. Indeed, according to him, an iMac Pro should arrive, even if it will not be for now.

We should therefore not have any news from the iMac during WWDC in June, but it is not excluded that Apple will proceed with an “intermediate” update during its fall keynote. Once again, for the fans, only one word: patience.
