After recurring rumors for nearly two years, Apple’s new MacBook Air is finally ready to be unveiled. This is what Mark Gurman, a well-informed journalist for the Bloomberg media, believes. In his May 29 Power On newsletter, the journalist shares his predictions ahead of the opening of Apple’s major developer conference WWDC. The event is scheduled for June 6, 2022, and already lets imagine something new on the side of augmented or virtual reality.

A brand new MacBook outside

According to Mark Gurman, Apple obviously should not present the new iPhones at WWDC. Apple’s smartphones have their moment reserved every year in September. On the other hand, Apple could well present hardware at its conference dedicated to developers. The journalist believes that the most likely is in the area of Macs, led by the new MacBook Air equipped with an Apple M2 chip.

He explains that supply chain tensions are still there, due to the Covid situation in China, but Apple employees are increasingly using the new MacBook Air, a sign that its arrival is very close.

A concept of MacBook Air offered in several colors

Apple is rumored to be preparing a MacBook Air with an all-new design. It must be said that the previous generation was the first machine of the brand to be equipped with an Apple Silicon chip, but this was done at the cost of a design without any innovation. Apple has revamped the design of its iMacs and MacBook Pros, and should now tackle the MacBook Air. We therefore imagine a screen with shortened edges, which we hope to switch to a mini-LED panel, and the choice between several colors for the chassis, like the iMac M1.

Apart from the adoption of the new MagSafe, we do not expect a change in connectivity, however, still very much oriented towards USB-C.

Apple M1 or M2?

The big question surrounding this new MacBook Air is rather inside the chassis. Will the manufacturer move to a new generation of chips, as Mark Gurman and several leaks announce? Or, constrained by production, will Apple have to continue using the M1 chip for this new design?

(4/4)
There is nothing bad with naming a minor-upgrade CPU of all-new design MBA as M2, which can also help new MBA sales. But if M2 series aims to bring great upgrades vs. M1 series and further enhance Apple Silicon’s brand image, using 2023 N3/N4P wafer for M2 is better.

— 郭明錤 (Ming-Chi Kuo) (@mingchikuo) May 29, 2022

This weekend, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reiterated that Apple could launch a MacBook Air with a new design and Apple M1 chip. It is precisely this new design that would be enough to convince new customers to take an interest in the new product. According to him, Apple could therefore wait until the next MacBook Pro to present an Apple M2 chip. This would allow Apple to ensure that the M2 chip is really a new chip offering a new level of performance, and not just a small component update that could create disappointment.
