My email inboxes are full to bursting. Every month, I review them all and eliminate the oldest messages to prevent the situation from degenerating. In this mass, there are a number of exchanges between family, friends, clients and even strangers, on which I have to come back to obtain answers or information. If it weren’t for this handy Apple Mail feature, locating those conversations would be a real hassle.
By default, Apple Mail groups these emails as a conversation. While you can turn it off, I don’t recommend doing so because otherwise your inbox could quickly spiral out of control.
But how do you configure Apple Mail to highlight these conversations so you can easily find them in your inbox? The application integrates this function and it is very simple to use.
You should know that when you activate this feature, all conversations in your inbox are marked in the same way. You cannot configure the feature so that each conversation is marked, or highlighted with a different color. However, you can customize the color used to tag conversations. But before you get to that, you need to enable the feature.
How to Highlight Conversations in Apple Mail
The only thing you will need is an updated version ofApple MayI. Of course, you will also need at least one email account configured for the app. There it’s done. Let’s highlight these conversations.
1. Open Apple Mail
The first thing to do is to open Apple Mail from the Dock or Launchpad.
2. Enable Highlight Conversations
Once Apple Mail is open, click Presentation > Highlight conversations. Once enabled, all conversations will be highlighted in a light blue color.

How do I change the highlight color of ungrouped messages?
Suppose you choose to turn off the view Conversation in Apple Mail. Some people prefer this mode because it makes it easier to read individual messages. If you turn Conversation view off, you’ll still want to be able to locate related emails, which Apple does automatically. The only thing you can change for this purpose is the highlight color. Unfortunately, you cannot configure the highlight color used when group conversations are highlighted. However, if you choose to disable Conversation Mode, you will still want to be able to Quickly locate related messages by color.
Here’s how to change the color of ungrouped conversations.
1. Open Preferences
When Apple Mail is open, click Email > Preferences.
2. Change Highlight Color of Ungrouped Messages
Click on the tab Presentation In Preferences and under View Conversations, click the color picker and select the color you want to use for ungrouped conversations. Once you’ve done that, close the window Preferences.

Once you have completed this step, if you click on Overview in Mail’s main menu and disable the option Organize by conversation, you will notice that the blue highlight disappears. However, if you click on any of the emails belonging to a conversation and scroll through your inbox, you will notice that all emails associated with that conversation are highlighted in the color you chose in the settings .
So. You’ve made it easier to find conversations in Apple Mail, whether you group them together or not.
