Apple Music resurrects Singstar and launches a karaoke mode

Apple Music Sing is a formidable tool for karaoke. Expected in December 2022, this feature will be accompanied by a drastic improvement in the display of lyrics on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV, with the possibility of varying the volume of the voice without touching the soundtrack.

Jean-Michel Apeupré better watch out, Apple Music is about to deploy one of the most impressive karaoke systems on the market. Like Singstar in its day, but with a much larger catalog, the new Apple Music Sing function will allow users of Apple’s streaming service to sing along by synchronizing their voice to the lyrics of a song. Different support systems will help perfect their rhythm. The implementation seems extremely successful, we can only hope that the catalog is just as rich.

Apple Music Sing interface impresses

It was with iOS 13 in 2019 that Apple added lyrics to Apple Music. Since then, the functionality has evolved little (and has been copied by the competition, in particular Spotify). Most of the songs available on Apple’s streaming service can display their lyrics in real time, with a line-by-line display. Apple also allows you to quickly jump to a specific moment in a song by touching the phrase in question.

With the arrival of Apple Music Sing in December (we can imagine this feature linked to iOS 16.2), Apple will go much further:

  • From now on, lyrics will be displayed syllable by syllable, and no longer line by line. We can more easily synchronize to the rhythm of a piece.
  • When there are backing vocals (several voices at the same time), the lead voice will appear larger. This will allow you to sing only the correct line during karaoke.
  • In case of a duet, Apple Music will display the lyrics in two columns. The first singer on the left, the second on the right. We will know more easily when there is a change of singer.
  • A small button in the shape of a microphone will only control the volume of the words. The optimized songs can be listened to in acoustic version, directly from the original song.

At launch (Apple has not indicated a specific date), Apple Music Sing will be offered in 50 playlists specially designed for the occasion (there will be many French songs from day one). The feature will be available on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV, but only the latest model. We don’t know why, but Apple has decided to limit this novelty to the Apple TV 4K of 2022.
