Apple rolls out enigmatic new firmware for its MagSafe chargers

Two years after their introduction to the market with the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro, MagSafe chargers benefit from a rather mysterious firmware update: Apple does not give any specific details on what it brings, but it remains important .

Launched as an accessory for the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro in 2020, MagSafe chargers are getting a firmware update this week. Lack of information from Apple (which is predictable for this type of updates) we ignore almost everything. This update nevertheless comes a few weeks after the release of the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro, but also that of the second generation AirPods Pro. It’s a safe bet that it simply aims to refine the compatibility of MagSafe chargers with the latest Apple products.

As a reminder, it is up to the firmware to detect a connected device and, in this case, to manage the charging speed. Launching a firmware update for MagSafe chargers immediately after the launch of new compatible devices therefore seems logical.

You have nothing to do (but you play the finished works inspector)

As reported MacRumors, the new firmware shows the following ID: 10M1821. The firmware installed so far was in version 10M229. This allows us to know if we have taken advantage of the update or not, because for the user, everything is perfectly transparent. The firmware update installs automatically and in the background when the MagSafe charger is used. The user is not notified of anything.

To find out if your MagSafe charger has already received its firmware update, you can do the following:

  • Install your iPhone on the MagSafe charger;
  • go to Settings;
  • click on “General”;
  • go to “Information”;
  • scroll down until you see “Operator Lockout” and pay attention to what’s just below;
  • the accessories menu is then before your eyes, click on “Apple MagSafe Charger” to discover the version of firmware installed.
