Apple is still interested in virtual reality, just like Microsoft who mentioned the construction of a Metaverse. It was during a conference call around Apple’s first quarter 2022 results with analysts and investors that Tim Cook indulged in some confidences.

Asked about Apple’s possible foray into a form of metaverse, and more generally about the firm’s projects in augmented reality and virtual reality, Tim Cook delivered his version of the subject.

The metaverse and virtual reality have “potential”

The Apple boss explained that they saw ” a lot of potential in this segment“. He then went on to explain at greater length why his company was interested in it and had invested accordingly:

We are a company focused on innovation. We are constantly exploring new and emerging technologies and this is an area of great interest to us. We have 14,000 augmented reality apps on the App Store, delivering amazing AR experiences to millions of people today. We see a lot of potential in this segment and are investing accordingly.

Tim Cook also explained that, when it comes to investing in a new market, Apple rather seeks a solution that brings together hardware, software and service offerings. Finally, he added that certain areas had piqued the interest of the apple brand, which has further increased its research and development budget.

It remains unlikely that Apple will embark on a metaverse or any project similar to that of Meta. The Cupertino company seems more interested in creating content in augmented and virtual reality, as well as the material aspect. As a reminder, Apple could release its own VR headset by the end of 2022 or early 2023, this one being once again delayed. It should carry a chip as powerful as the Apple M1, two 4K OLED screens, Wi-Fi 6E, as well as its own App Store.
