The firm headed by Tim Cook is planning a major change in its production chain. Indeed, Apple should soon source chips from the West.

This will obviously concern the United States, but also Europe.

Off to Arizona!

Like the largest multinationals, Apple depends almost exclusively on Asia to produce its mobile phones and other touch pads. The apple brand is particularly dependent on Taiwan, which produces around 60% of the world’s processors. A strategy undermined by recent geopolitical and health events. But the Cupertino company is about to shake things up.

The newspaper Bloomberg announces that Apple plans to source supplies from a US-based factory within the next two years. The site will undoubtedly be that of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) in Arizona. Currently under construction, it will focus on the production of chips. When it opens in 2024, the factory should be able to create up to 20,000 chips per month. 5 nanometer processors will be produced there.

Europe also concerned?

The good news is that Apple doesn’t plan to source from the United States alone. Tim Cook himself is said to have expressed to Apple staff members his wish to relocate part of the chip production to Europe. While no concrete details have been released outside of this statement, we do know that TSMC is negotiating with the German government to open a factory there. If the project were to succeed, we imagine that Apple will position itself to use the installation.

What is certain is that continents like Europe and North America have the will to attract semiconductor manufacturers to their region. The US government, for example, has released an envelope of 52 billion dollars to encourage companies to build their components in the country. There is no doubt that these initiatives will multiply over the years.
