Apple spies on its employees via their badge to make sure they come to the office

Oliver Adey 24 March 2023 2 min read

Journalist Zoë Schiffer revealed on Twitter that Apple tracks the comings and goings of its employees at its offices. After the Covid-19 pandemic, the Cupertino company imposed 3 days of face-to-face work per week on its teams. To ensure that this rule is respected, it does not hesitate to spy on the badge of its employees.

While the tech world has been laying off workers since the beginning of the year, Apple has opted for the opposite strategy by increasing the salaries of its employees to encourage them to stay with the company. When the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, it was also one of the first in the industry to introduce a telecommuting system. But in recent months, these last measures have largely evolved.

Indeed, at the end of 2022, Apple reinstated face-to-face work in its offices. Employees are now entitled to two days of teleworking per week, the rest having to be done on site. And to ensure that they respect these new instructions, the Cupertino company does not hesitate to reconnect with its bad bad habits.

Apple has found a new way to spy on its employees

We know that Apple has a tendency to spy on its employees, whether under the guise of product testing or, more frontally, by requiring them to wear a camera during their work. Today, it is the badges of the employees, used to point their arrival at the offices, which are used to track their activity, according to the journalist Zoë Schiffer.

Thus, those who are present less than 3 times a week risk “increasing warnings […] which may lead to dismissal. However, it would seem that this strategy does not apply to all departments of the company. At present, it is difficult to say whether this measure was put in place to deal with abuse by employees or simply to verify that the regulation is applied.

At Apple, some orgs are saying failure to comply could result in termination, but that doesn’t appear to be a company-wide policy.
