Apple: The Cnil imposes a fine of €8 million on Apple

PARIS (Reuters) – The National Commission for Computing and Liberties (CNIL) announced on Wednesday a fine of eight million euros against the American giant Apple for breaching the rules of protection of personal data.

This fine comes after the opening of an investigation by the Cnil following the complaint filed in 2021 by the France Digitale association, which brings together hundreds of start-ups and investors.

France Digitale claimed in its complaint that Apple’s old operating system, iOS 14, does not comply with European requirements for the protection of personal data.

“The restricted CNIL panel fined Apple Distribution International 8 million euros for not having obtained the consent of French iPhone users (iOS version 14.6) before filing and/or writing identifiers used for advertising purposes on their terminals”, says the Cnil.

The Apple group said it was “disappointed” by the Cnil’s decision.

“We believe that privacy is a fundamental human right and that a user should always be able to decide if they want to share their data and with whom,” adds Apple.

Last December, the rapporteur of the restricted training of the Cnil had recommended imposing a fine of six million euros against Apple.
