M2 processors barely launched, Apple is already working on their successors
Apple introduced its M2 processor with the MacBook Air and the 13-inch MacBook Pro in the summer of 2022. This new chip has brought a significant performance boost to its consumer machines, and even the latest 2022 iPad Pro which is also in endowed.
If, at the start of the year, the brand focused more on its Pro range, with the launch of the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro M2s equipped with the M2 Pro and M2 Max processors, the new generation of Apple-stamped processors is already under construction.
Mark Gurman from Bloomberg shares with us today several information on this new processor, but also on the first computers that would benefit from it at launch.
Reduced engraving fineness for lower power consumption
The Apple M3 could be presented by the brand from the end of this year 2023, or the beginning of 2024 at the latest. The Cupertino company would work on three first devices, namely a 13-inch MacBook Air, a new MacBook Air which would benefit from a 15-inch screen and a new 24-inch iMac which would probably be a technical refresh, without modifying its design. Note that the 13-inch MacBook Pro is not mentioned here. Perhaps Apple will take advantage of the launch of the M3 chip to put an end to this aging model.
The production of the chip would still be entrusted to the good care of TSMC and would benefit from an engraving fineness of 3 nanometers, against 5 for the M2 processor. Performance gains would be around 15%, and power consumption would be reduced by 30% on average.
It is very likely that the iPad Pro will also benefit from an update to the M3 processor, but Mark Gurman has previously indicated that the range of Apple tablets should not evolve or not this year. We might have to wait until 2024 to see it appear on the market.
