Apple: the virtual reality headset would be postponed to 2023

More and more mentioned in rumors, the mixed reality headset from Apple would finally be expected in 2023.

It’s not every day that Apple launches a new product category instead of the classic renewals. For several months, rumors have agreed on the development of a mixed reality headset in Cupertino. This is a long-term project for Apple, which intends to use mixed reality as a stepping stone towards a future in augmented reality.

Analyst Jeff Pu of Haiton International Securities thinks that the first Apple headset would no longer be planned for 2022, but rather for the beginning of the year 2023. The specialized site 9To5Mac relays this analysis, and indicates that Apple would have expected the sale of 1 to 1.5 million helmets in the first year.

Is an announcement at WWDC still credible?

Recently, we could hear that the beginnings of iOS 16, whose presentation is expected in June, included references to rOS or realityOS, the name of Apple’s operating system dedicated to mixed reality. Many analysts expect a presentation of virtual reality made in Apple from this WWDC 2022.

With a launch at the beginning of 2023, can we still hope for it? It wouldn’t be the first time that Apple has teased a long-term project at its developer conference. This is the ideal event to motivate developers to think about the future augmented reality applications they can create. If the headset launches in Q1 2023, WWDC 2022 will be the last developer conference before that launch.

It therefore seems unlikely to present the helmet as a consumer product from this event. However, Apple could choose to present a development kit. This is what the firm had done with the Developer Transition Kit, a Mac Mini M1 before its time, which had allowed developers to start adapting their macOS applications for Apple Silicon chips. Alternatively, Apple could just present realityOS and the new interaction methods that the system offers.
