Apple TV 4K (2022) is coming with HDMI 2.1 QMS, but what is it?

The new Apple TV 4K had a little surprise in store for us: it supports HDMI 2.1 QMS. But what is it ?

Announced on October 18, 2022, the third-generation Apple TV 4K includes the A15 Bionic chip, 4GB of memory, HDR10+ support, and a USB-C charging port on the Siri Remote. As for the case, it adopts a thinner, lighter and fanless design (and therefore with passive cooling). Finally, its price has come down.

The first units tested point out that Apple has also added support for Quick Media Switching (QMS) with (Variable Refresh Rate) via a tvOS software update.

What is HDMI 2.1 QRR?

QMS VRR prevents black screens that occur when switching between content playing at different frame rates. This happens when you switch from 24 frames per second (24Hz) content such as a movie, to TV content broadcast at 50 frames per second (50Hz) or even 60 frames per second (60Hz).

You have to go through HDMI 2.1 since the HDMI 2.1 QMS function is only supported by this standard. And, again, most TVs only support HDMI 2.1 VRR. It is therefore not on the menu of the day, finally for the moment.

Let’s wait for the new tvOS update to be rolled out more widely, and for TV manufacturers to update their products afterwards.
