In addition to iOS 16 for the iPhone, Apple is also bringing tvOS 16 to the Apple TV. The Apple TV app is also getting an upgrade for better picture quality: the video standard HDR10+ is to be introduced there in the future.
Apple TV app: what does HDR10+ bring?
Like the competing product Dolby Vision, HDR10+ improves the color and contrast representation of content and thus the general image quality. Deep black and glowing sparks should look even more impressive on the screen of compatible end devices.
As a further development of the HDR10 standard, HDR10+ thus includes a color spectrum of 12 bits, which can represent billions of color tones more than its predecessor. The latter are particularly important with soft color gradients, which therefore appear much more stepless.
The most advanced HDR standards HDR 10+ Adaptive and Dolby Vision IQ can even automatically adjust the image to the ambient brightness.
tvOS 16 compatible with Nintendo controllers
The manufacturer from Cupertino also wants to provide its new operating system for the Apple TV with additional hardware compatibility, which gamers in particular should be happy about: After the Xbox and Playstation controllers, tvOS 16 should also support the Nintendo Joy-Con and Pro Controller support switches.
Apple confirmed this to the English-language specialist medium “flatpanelsHD.com”. With iOS 16 you can also use the Nintendo controllers for your iPhone.
June 16 update
HDR10+ will probably not come to the Apple TV app with the next major update after all. Now that Apple has deleted the announcement from all sides recently noted in the preview for iOS 16 and other important software updates, at least the hopes for it should be seen as unrealistic.
Apple never announced the upgrade of its streaming app to the HDR10+ standard, but after a corresponding note appeared in the digital update data sheets for iOS, tvOS and other Apple operating systems, the new feature was actually considered safe.
Now the disillusionment: The removal of the update note probably means that the additional billions of colors and metadata-based optimizations of HDR10+ will probably not enrich the image quality of the Apple TV app for the time being.
