Apple took advantage of its annual conference for developers, WWDC 2023, to present iOS 17, the new version of its operating system for iPhone. Here are the main new features announced by the Cupertino company.

Apple unveiled iOS 17, the latest version of its iPhone operating system, at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). This major update brings a host of new features and improvements.

StandBy, a horizontal mode for the iPhone

One of the major innovations of iOS 17 is the “StandBy “, a feature inspired by the mode ” night stand of the Apple Watch. This feature transforms your iPhone’s screen to accommodate new information and widgets when it’s on standby, providing quick access to your connected objects, for example.

More interactive and varied widgets

Widgets, introduced with iOS 14, are even more present on iOS 17. They are now more interactive, which allows actions to be carried out directly from the widget, without having to open the corresponding application. For example, the Weather widget lets you check the forecast for the next few hours, the Music widget lets you control playback or change tracks, and the Notes widget lets you quickly create or edit a note.

Journal, an application dedicated to journaling

iOS 17 also introduces a new journaling app. This health and mood-focused app allows users to track their feelings and well-being over time. This is part of Apple’s desire to focus more on health-related features in its products.

Messages refines

An addition to Messages that should satisfy the most anxious, Check-In makes sure your loved ones are on the right path and arrive safely when they leave you. Also on iMessage, there is a change of interface with the disappearance of all buttons apart from text entry and the button for recording voice messages. Everything else (photos, stickers, etc.) is grouped under a “+” button. Plus, it will now be able to create and share animated stickers on the go. Moreover, the keyboard has great improvements on self-correction thanks to an improvement in its algorithm.

Improvements for existing applications

  • iMessage, Telephone and FaceTime have a contact personalization tool similar to the one used to expand your home screen.
  • AirDrop improves with the ability to quickly share contact information and continue sharing over the Internet like a WeTransfer.
  • Also in the theme, the recording of a message to land in voicemail will now be visible with a live text transcription from the call screen.
  • Maps now allows downloading regional maps to work offline.
  • Siri is getting smarter, with the ability to activate without the need for “Say.”
