Apple Watch: App should help snore

The smartwatch as an anti-snoring device: A new app wants to help Apple watch wearers to snore less. The program called “Silent Night” continuously analyzes the ambient noise recorded by the watch microphone, as the developer announced. As soon as the app detects snoring noises, the user should be tapped lightly on the wrist via the vibration motor (Taptic Engine) integrated in the Apple Watch in order to trigger a change in sleeping position and thereby stop snoring at the same time.

The recording and processing of the noises takes place exclusively on the clock, all data is removed again after the evaluation, emphasizes the developer Mobile Box. He also recommends switching off the Apple Watch’s wireless connections completely, as this does not affect the functionality of the app. An online connection or the connection to the iPhone should not be required.

The continuous recording and analysis of ambient noise seems to have considerable processor requirements and accordingly suck on the battery: The Apple Watch should be fully charged before going to bed, explains the app provider. This is the only way for the app to do its work overnight without the clock switching itself off when the battery is empty. A reduction in the battery charge level of around 10 percent per hour is expected. Silent Night requires iOS 15 and watchOS 8, the app costs 5 euros.

Apple has conditioned watch wearers to charge the watch overnight – instead of carrying it on. For a long time, the manufacturer left the market for sleep apps entirely to third-party developers; there are also anti-snoring apps already, some of which require a data connection. It was only since watchOS 7 that Apple integrated a rudimentary sleep tracking function into the operating system, and since watchOS 8, the breathing rate while sleeping has also been recorded. The new Apple Watch Series 7 was also designed for faster charging. The watch can also wake up quietly with a tap.
