At its September keynote, Apple presented the new Apple Watch Series 9. The updated model isn’t much different from its predecessor, the Apple Watch Series 8, but it does come with some thoughtful new features. The manufacturer has primarily improved the display and performance, and a lot has also happened on the software side. We will look at the most important innovations below.

New processor, longer battery life

Apple is installing the new S9 SiP chip in the Apple Watch Series 9. This should work significantly faster and at the same time deliver a decent battery life of 18 hours. The S9 is intended to enable system-wide improvements and new functions, including new gesture control through the combination of an accelerometer, gyroscope and optical heart sensor. In addition, a new 4-core neural engine is used, which does machine learning twice as fast as its predecessor.

New gesture: Double Tab

Anyone who wears the Apple Watch Series 9 while holding a coffee mug or a dog leash can look forward to a new form of operation: Double Tab. The Apple Watch registers when your index finger and thumb tap together. Calls can be accepted and ended using the gesture. You can also stop a timer, mute an alarm, pause or resume playback, and more. The gesture emulates an app’s main gesture for easier control.

Siri gets access to health data

With the Apple Watch Series 9 and the new S9 chip, you now have the opportunity to access your health data via Siri for the first time. The voice assistant allows you to query data from Apple Health. Siri can now answer how many hours you clocked last night or what your blood sugar level is like if you have a corresponding monitor connected.

New ultra-wideband chip

The new Apple Watch has a new ultra-wideband chip that makes it easier to find your iPhone. The smartwatch shows you the exact distance to the smartphone and notifies you acoustically and haptically when you approach the iPhone – even if it is in another room.

The Apple Watch also recognizes when you approach the HomePod or HomePod mini. A corresponding Apple Music widget appears on the display, which you can use to play music.

Display – brighter and darker at the same time

The Apple Watch has got an improved always-on display. The new model has a maximum brightness of 2,000 nits, making it easy to read even in sunshine. Furthermore, Apple has also worked in the other direction. The minimum brightness is just one nit, so you can use the smartwatch in dark environments more undisturbed and without glare.

Available colors and sizes

The new smartwatch model will again be available in aluminum and stainless steel versions in sizes 41 and 45 millimeters. The aluminum version is available in the colors Polarstern, midnight, silver and red. The stainless steel Apple Watch is available in gold, silver and graphite. There is also an innovation in the bracelets. Apple completely avoids the use of animal leather. As an alternative, a newly developed fine fabric is used.

When will the Apple Watch Series 9 be released?

The Apple Watch Series 9 can now be pre-ordered. The new model goes on sale on September 22nd.

How much does the Apple Watch Series 9 cost?

Prices for the Apple Watch Series 9 start at 449 euros for the smaller aluminum version.
