Apple will invest a billion dollars a year to find a place in dark rooms

Will Apple become a movie heavyweight? This is the ambition of the Cupertino company, which plans to spend a billion dollars a year in the production of films intended for cinemas, according to sources familiar with the matter cited by Bloomberg. This fits “as part of an ambitious effort to increase its visibility in Hollywood and attract subscribers to its streaming service”indicates the American press agency.

Apple has reportedly approached several film studios to release several films in theaters this year. Killers of the Flower by Martin Scorsese, the spy thriller Argylle by Matthew Vaughn, or even Napoleon by Ridley Scott would be among the big productions targeted by the apple brand.

Through this approach, the objective would be to create an appeal for air in thousands of dark rooms around the world to encourage viewers to subsequently subscribe to Apple TV+, a platform struggling with the streaming behemoths that are Netflix and Disney+. Currently, the service of Tim Cook’s company has only nearly 40 million subscribers, far from the more than 230 million claimed by Netflix. Apple also faces competition from Amazon, owner of the famous Metro Goldwyn Mayer studio since 2021, which wants to release 12 to 15 films a year in theaters.
