Update : Numerama has been confirmed, Apple has announced that it will cancel the launch of several functions, including Apple Intelligence, throughout the European Union. In France, and therefore 26 countries.

“Due to regulatory uncertainties caused by the Digital Markets Act (DMA), we do not expect to be able to roll out three features—iPhone Mirroring, SharePlay Screen Sharing enhancements, and Apple Intelligence—to our EU users this year ».

Bad news for Apple fans in Europe: some of the most anticipated features of iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia will not be available this year. According to Mark Gurman, analysis at BloombergApple would have made the decision not to release these features here because of the DMA, the Digital Market App of the European Union.

The DMA is a regulation that aims to promote competition in the technology industry in Europe. Apple has already been forced to change some of its business practices because of the DMA, such as the distribution of apps on iPhone or the opening of Apple Pay. But this time, it is the new functions that would pay the price.

The most anticipated features will not be available in Europe this year

Among the features that would not be available in Europe this year are anything related to Apple Intelligence, iPhone mirroring on macOS, and SharePlay Screensharing.

This could explain why these features are missing from the beta versions of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. If Apple decides not to release them this year in Europe, this means that it immediately becomes less important to switch to an iPhone 15 Pro or an iPhone 16 to take advantage of Apple Intelligence.

This would be a big setback for Apple. But it’s also a shame for European users, who risk feeling left behind compared to users in other parts of the world.

As a reminder, the DMA was put in place to promote competition and protect consumers. But in this specific case, it seems that the regulation will have negative consequences for European Apple users.
