Apple is reportedly in discussions with Google to integrate artificial intelligence into iOS 18. The manufacturer is reportedly behind schedule in developing its own language model.
Apple will accelerate this year on the subject of artificial intelligence. Left behind by Microsoft and its massive investment in OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, as well as by Google, the Apple brand seems to have stood still for many months.
However, Apple engineers are hard at work developing a proprietary language model, several research papers of which have been published in recent weeks. We could have imagined that Apple would reveal its developments this year during the presentation of iOS 18, during WWDC 2024 which will take place in June 2024, but new information has reshuffled the cards .
Apple could bring Gemini to iOS
According to Mark Gurman, the media’s very knowledgeable journalist BloombergApple is reportedly in advanced negotiations with Google to integrate Gemini into iOS 18 this year.
The agreements are not yet well defined, but Apple would need a ready-to-use, cloud-based model to bring more powerful AI features to the brand’s operating system.
Apple would also have in stock some artificial intelligence services running locally on the iPhone, such as photo editing or real-time translation, but whose possibilities would be limited. To catch up this year, Apple would have no other choice than to enter into a partnership with Google.
A considerable delay in AI compared to Google and Microsoft
A deal between Google and Apple wouldn’t be that surprising. The two companies are already linked by an 18 billion dollar partnership to make Google the default search engine on iPhones, iPads and Macs. Apple would, however, discuss in parallel with OpenAI, but an alliance between the two seems more unlikely.
This rumor shows that Apple has fallen considerably behind in the field of artificial intelligence, despite numerous acquisitions of specialized start-ups. Its work on Ajax, a language model developed by it, seems very far from reaching the performance of its two biggest competitors.
iOS 18 could be accompanied by a Siri powered by AI and much more efficient than today, as well as assisted writing features in Messages applications or in Apple’s office software.
For the moment, no agreement between Google and Apple has been sealed, and Apple still has a few weeks to decide whether to sign a partnership or to lower its ambitions, the time to improve its own technology.
