Announced at WWDC 2023, the Apple Vision Pro headset will use an iris scanner to authenticate its user.

The long-awaited news has fallen from Apple. The Apple Vision Pro VR headset will be marketed in early 2024. On this occasion, Apple taught us a little more about the features of its future model, particularly in terms of authentication.

After Touch ID and Face ID, here is Optic ID

After launching Touch ID, then Face ID on its mobile devices, Apple announced the arrival of Optic ID. This is none other than its first biometric iris scanner, and this technology will be integrated into the brand’s new VR headset.

The authentication method will be used to unlock the headset and authenticate for other actions, similar to Face ID on an iPhone. Thus, the user will be able to validate his payments with Apple Pay by using Optic ID to make his purchases without leaving the interface of the Vision Pro headset.

By exposing the iris to a specific LED, the technology in question will be able to scan it and compare it to the data previously recorded in the device. Note that this “original” copy of the iris is intended to be stored securely locally to avoid any data leaks which could have serious consequences.
