With the iPhone 15, Apple should finally adopt USB-C as a charging port. The firm would prepare a one-of-a-kind port, as it knows how to do to protect its interests and perhaps those of the consumer.
Apple has adopted USB-C on most of its machines for professionals, in particular MacBooks and iPads, but we are still waiting for the same transition for the iPhone. In all likelihood, it should finally arrive with the iPhone 15, thanks to a European Union bond.
A rumor relayed by the site MacRumors however, believes that the integration of USB-C on iPhone 15 would not be without making some consumers cringe.
An accessory identification chip
According to this rumor, Apple would like to integrate an accessory identification chip into its iPhone 15. The firm already uses this type of chip with its Lightning products to ensure that connected accessories are properly certified. In other words, that they are genuine accessories and that the manufacturers have paid their commission to Apple. A system that can be beneficial for consumer safety, since it ensures the authenticity of the accessories used, but which is also very juicy financially for Apple.
This could be understood for a proprietary connector only offered by Apple, but here the firm would therefore consider extending it to a standard connector. It would be a first, none of the USB-C ports of its devices so far have integrated such an identification chip.
In this scenario, would connecting the USB-C cable from a Samsung Galaxy smartphone or a Dell XPS PC to charge your iPhone be detected as problematic by Apple? Or is it to limit the functionality of the USB-C port depending on the accessory.
In November 2022, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted the use of two different feature levels for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro. The former would be entitled to a slower USB-C port than the latter.
Even being forced to use a standard, Apple has obviously not finished surprising us with its choice of technologies.
