ArcelorMittal, VEO and McPhy will build a pilot smelter in Germany – 2023-04-05 18:17

(AOF) – The global steel and mining group ArcelorMittal is making progress on the path to low-carbon steel production at its Eisenhüttenstadt site in Germany. In collaboration with energy supplier Vulkan Energiewirtschaft Oderbrücke (VEO) and McPhy Energy (a specialist in low-carbon hydrogen production and distribution equipment), ArcelorMittal Eisenhüttenstadt will build a pilot electrolysis plant and a hydrogen at the plant site.

This project includes the supply of two McLyzer electrolysers with a power of 1 MW each. In addition, a five-year service contract has been concluded. The Brandenburg region is financing the project to the tune of 5.1 million euros within the framework of the regional innovation cluster.

The electrolyzers will produce hydrogen directly used in the production of steel. The hydrogen will first be used in the cold rolling mill. The charging station will then refuel forklifts or trucks with part of the hydrogen production. The oxygen recovered on site during electrolysis can be reused in production within the hot rolling mill.
