- Prince Harry participated in a seminar by videoconference this Monday, May 16
- He talked about the dangers of the internet and social networks for children
- The Duke of Sussex is very worried about Archie and Lilibet and their future on the internet
The dangers of the internet can affect everyone, including members of the royal family and Prince Harry is well aware of this. This Monday, May 16, he participated via screen in a seminar organized by the 5Rights Foundation entitled “Global child online safety toolkit”, which corresponds to a set of tools to allow ensure the safety of children on the internet. From his home in California, the Duke of Sussex called for more protection for minors on the internet, exploited by large companies to attract visibility and therefore profits. Lilibet and Archie’s father explained that, “as parents, my wife and I are worried about the next generation who are about to grow up in a world where they are viewed as guinea pigs by corporations out to make money, and where hatred and violence have been so normalized”.
Married to Meghan Markle who herself suffered violent attacks on the internet – and who still suffers today – Prince Harry knows only too well that the online world is unforgiving and can push people to do the irreparable. “At the moment my two little ones are still innocent. And sometimes I have the feeling that I could save them from all this violence, but I know that is not possible“. Like all the people taking part in the seminar, Prince Harry therefore calls for more secure use of the internet and especially of social networks, which is at the heart ofdeep concern he feels for his children. “They are too young to know the internet but I hope they will never have to experience it as it exists today. No child should have to go through this.”.
Prince Harry wants to protect Archie and Lilibet from the dangers of social networks
While pointing out all the flaws of social networks, Prince Harry is however aware that this is not an error on the part of the large media groups that own them but that everything is precisely calculated to capture the attention of the youngest and make the most of it. “The system isn’t broken, it does exactly what it’s supposed to do. Hold our attention, cause anger or anxiety, or render us completely indifferent to whatever is going on around us”. According to the Duke of Sussex, it is therefore essential to have new laws in place to protect the most vulnerable, but also for public opinion to exert pressure so that bigger companies are forced to be more transparent. “We are at a crucial moment, and we will all need to be mobilized to ensure that children grow up in a digital age that allows them to truly flourish”.
