Are teachers really absent more than in other professions? A survey responds: Femme Actuelle Le MAG

Minister of Sports in the government of Élisabeth Borne, Amélie Oudéa-Castéra retained her functions following the replacement of the former Prime Minister by Gabriel Attal. At the head of the Ministry of National Education before being named head of government, the new resident of Matignon has rightly chosen to entrust his former ministry to Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, in addition to that of Sports. Unfortunately, the new Minister of National Education stood out in the worst way for her debut in her new position. Indeed, it caused a controversy in justifying the schooling of his children in a private school because of the too many absences of teachers in the public school. If the absence of non-replaced teachers is indeed a recurring problem within National Education, Release still wanted to know if teachers are absent more often than other professions. The daily revealed a survey which states precisely the opposite, Monday January 15, 2024.

Teachers less absent than private sector employees

According to a study by the General Directorate of Administration and Civil Service (DGAFP), teachers are less often absent for health reasons than other civil servants. According to this data, which dates from 2019, only 2.6% of teachers were absent at least one day for health reasons during a week. The DGAFP only counts absences for health reasons of less than one year in its data. In contrast, 5.1% of territorial civil servants were absent at least one day during a week due to health reasons in 2019. Teacher absenteeism is also lower than that of employees in the private sector. In all, 3.9% of them were absent at least one day during a week for health reasons during that same year. This study also reveals that teachers are more likely to suffer from communicable diseases and burnout than other professions. For its part, the Court of Auditors estimated, in a report dating from 2021, that 10% of lesson hours were missed by high school and middle school students during the 2018-2019 school year.
