Since 2015, bisphenol A has been banned in the manufacture of all food packaging in France since the National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety had classified it as an endocrine disruptor. Indeed, this chemical substance can have serious effects on human health with in particular miscarriagesof the cognitive delays but also sexual and reproductive dysfunctions. The European Chemicals Agency even included bisphenol A in their list substances of very high concern in 2017.
However, according to a study published this Wednesday, April 19, by the consumer association, UFC-Que Choisir, other forms of bisphenol are now used in the manufacture of many food packaging and everyday baby products. An alarming finding since these new substances can be harmful for the child but also for the pregnant woman.

The association thus revealed the presence of bisphenol in “more than a hundred food packaging or objects intended for babies”. Out of 14 baby bottles and cups tested, 6 showed traces of this chemical, as well as in 7 out of 12 teething rings. disturbing results knowing that “endocrine disruptors are more particularly harmful in the early stages of child development”. “It is outrageous that too many manufacturers have not yet taken action to the height of the potential risks induced by these compounds“, denounced the UFC-Que Choisir.
In addition to products intended for children, these chemical components have also been identified in all the tin cans and soda cans analyzed by the association. However, if pregnant women use these products, they can transmit this substance to their child, since the placental barrier does not offer “no protection” to the fetus. The association denounces a European regulation “particularly lax” since she doesthe impasse on food packaging”. UFC-Que Choisir therefore demands “that the French and European health authorities prohibit any use of bisphenols in food packaging and products intended for children”.
